Center Jesse Edwards will be out for the remainder of Syracuse’s season after suffering a fractured left wrist, SU Athletics announced in a press release. The injury occurred against Boston College on Tuesday, a game where Edwards had an uncharacteristic zero points and fouled out for the 11th time this season.

Edwards developed into an integral part of SU’s starting lineup, starting in all 24 of the Orange’s games and averaging 27.8 minutes per game. Edwards made a sizable leap during the offseason after he averaged just 8.9 minutes per game last year. Since, he’s grown into one of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s front-runners for most improved player and a crucial member of Syracuse’s frontcourt.

The Netherlands native anchored the middle of the 2-3 zone with 71 blocks, the second-most in the ACC. He joined Syracuse’s four other starters in averaging double-digit points (12.0 points per game). Edwards’ absence leaves backup centers Frank Anselem and Bourama Sidibe to fill in.

Repeatedly last year, head coach Jim Boeheim said Edwards wasn’t ready to play a significant role for the Orange. This year, that discussion has changed, with Boeheim emphasizing how important Edwards is to SU and its success.

“Jesse’s been playing at a high level,” Boeheim said after the Boston College game.
